Florida State 31 Notre Dame 27
13 seconds and Corey Robinson wide open from the time he left the line of scrimmage, no way FSU defenders would have gotten to him regardless of what CJ Prosise might or might not have done.
No way ND was going to be allowed to leave that stadium with a win if refs could find the tiniest of infraction. ND didn’t lose this game, the refs won it for FSU. Check out Kelly’s post game wrap up – guy was burning mad. Here is the video:
Stats were in favor of ND 470 yards to 326. ND 150 yards to 50 for FSU.
Golson passed for 313 yards, but had 2 picks and a fumble.
FSU QB Winston got hot in the second half but ND’s young aggressive defense hung in there giving the offense a chance to win – which they really did.
Notre Dame on the road, hostile environment along with prime time national coverage and they did not flinch. This was their best game of the year and it was Kelly’s best game in the 5 years coaching at ND.
Game balls to RB Folston 120 yards rushing and LB Schmidt for 9 tackles.
Team played much better than I expected and it’s a damn shame they got jobbed especially by a team led by a disgrace to college football.
Frank Leahy once remarked on traveling south that he was not concerned about the opponent but he was about the refs. ND had to score 2-3 times for one of them to count.
Next week a bye week then onto Navy.
Here are the game highlights:

ND is a very good team over the last three years but I have seen them win their share of close games with the help of officiating. Stanford and Pitt in 2012. Michigan State last year. NC last week with the drive extending roughing the center which was questionable. This game’s first TD drive was enabled by an errant face mask call benefitting ND.
Truth is ND has been in a lot of close games and they have a habit of being decided by one play, a turnover or an officiating call. The way I see it, ND has more wins due to this than losses in the last 3 seasons.
Specifically, in 2012, you have to wonder what the referees thought they saw when they called pass interference against Pitt cornerback K’Waun Williams early in the fourth quarter. Williams made a perfect play on an Everett Golson pass to Tyler Eifert on fourth and four — leaping up, playing the ball the whole way and deflecting it. Unfortunately for the Panthers, the officials saw the call differently and flagged Pitt for pass interference. What may have stung even more for the Panther is that it not only kept the Fighting Irish’s drive alive, but they scored on the next play to make it a one-score game. go back and watch the youtube of that one and tell me if you disagree.
PK–you must have a lot of time on your hands to go back and watch Pitt games so closely.
As to the FSU game–clearly no penalty, number one ND receivers jammed and number two FSU player took off his helmet in the end zone–so penalty ag ND followed by unsportsman like conduct ag FSU-not called would have given ND a first down at or near the one yard line.
Since you took the time to write 2 posts and like to watch old videos I would suggest as your next assignment you watch every ND vs USC game–PAC 10 refs screwed ND just about every time they played in the Coliseum.
Finally why is Winston even allowed to play or remain as a so called student?
Come on, you know ND needed Winston to play as much as FSU did. Without him a victory would have been down played and a near loss completely unacceptable. So, that point is… pointless.
PK-lot of banter from you, which is quite humorous to me. Now I really want you to concentrate. A play in the end zone where a TD occurs is far more significant than a play on the 50 yard line or wherever else it could occur. To take a TD away, there has to be a blatant foul, not from the ref in back of the endzone, who was screened–the line judge did not call the penalty.
Refs are not supposed to determine the winner but unfortunately that is what occurred. Reverse the situation–do you really think a flag on a FSU TD–c’mon.
Now as far as Winston concerned no problem-we beat him. Did I want him to play–sure. Why not, care less that FSU is so corrupt that a guy with one foot in a jail cell is still in that so called institution. But ND always plays the best and I’m glad he played, all ND fans want to play the best each and every game.
You seem to be a Pitt fan coming up with an obscure DB’s nsme, so I will concede ND did not belong in the NC game–but everyone else lost. I wanted to see Alabama vs Oregon, like everyone else but if Pitt played Alabama??
Let’s consider the conversation closed but continue the research on ND USC that I gave you and report back to me after your intensive investigation.
I watched that last touchdown play of the FSU game several times and it is clear that the defender initiated contact first. I hate to agree with Brian Kelly, but he is right when he said they got rewarded for blown coverage. The refs clearly wanted to give this game to the criminal organization known as FSU. This was a more obvious robbery than Winston getting caught stealing crab legs…
