Notre Dame 31 LSU 28
An unexpected ND team showed up for the cold Music Bowl – a methodical battering OL that really manhandled the vaunted LSU front seven.
Starting with the new QB Zaire and 2 TE sets, the Irish pounded away all game running the ball and throwing just enough passes – some really critical to control the clock 37 min to 23 min for LSU and putting up 449 yards total offense to LSU’s 436.
LSU really had 3-4 plays the whole game:
- 100 yd kickoff return by Fournette
- 89 yd burst by Fournette
- 50 yard pass where not one ND player was within 25 yards of the guy
Nevertheless this was a hard fought battle until the very end with ND’s Brindza kicking the winning FG to run out the clock.
Zaire really played lights out. He looked confident, determined and he is a punishing runner. He looks 2x the size of Golson who seemed to look smaller and smaller as the game progressed, but give credit where due, he had some clutch pass completions during the game.
For once Kelly called almost a perfect game and completely confused LSU. While on the other hand, Les Miles got too cute at the end of the half with a fake FG attempt. When you have a big strong back like Fournett he’ll get you the 2 yds or just kick the FG. Those 3 pointers matter.
For ND going ahead it is obvious that Zaire will be the QB and Golson has a decision to make. He won’t make it in the Pros – so take that 5th year at Miami Ohio or UConn.
Telling Stats:
- Time of Possessio: ND 37 min LSU 23
- Total Yds: ND 449 LSU 436
- 1st Downs: ND 23 LSU 17
