Why does a big win like this one make me so nervous going ahead? ND almost got blown out in the 1st half as Virginia looked unstoppable and led 17-14.

What the hell is happening to Ian Book? He really seems more indecisive and making more bad decisions. He was better last year. He ended the day 17/25 165 yards – no TD’s, but also no picks but was sacked 2x.

He runs out of bounds when he could throw it away. Not really bad numbers, but the defense really won this game. It’s almost as though somebody is getting into his head – Kelly?

Kelly has no problem removing QB’s as Book well knows. Is something going on that’s affecting his poise and pocket presence and confidence?

Chip Long so far has run a helter skelter offense that is not helping Book at all. I don’t like whatever he is trying to do, but at least this week ND ran the ball and Tony Jones had a great day 18/132 and 3 TD’s.

For the last 2 after game pressers Kelly has hinted about changes on the offense. Something is spooking Book.

Okwara is a monster on defense – he’s ready for the Pro’s right now.

As expected ND blew out New Mexico with all sorts of highlights although NM was able to run the ball against the ND defense.

Ian Book, when given time can go long and all day – his passes were razor sharp. He ended with 5 TD passes accounting for 366 yards.

Two of the passes were shovel passes to Avery Davis 58 yard TD and Chris Finke 54 yard TD. Claypool and McKinley had a great day receiving with McKinley scoring his first TD.

On the negative side the ND OL frequently could not get any push against smaller opponents. They had a hell of a time getting 1 yard and in one of the QB sneaks, TE Brock Wright literally had to pick Book up and drive him forward.

Georgia’s DL will be a nastier one and ND simply has to be able to run up the middle.

New Mexico arrives at ND without its HC Bob Davie who is ill. They also lost their QB and first string NG and Captain. They’re the lucky ones for the remainder are going to get pulverized.

This is not a very good team and went 3-9 in the last 2 seasons. Davie would be gone but NM can’t afford the buyout.

With sunny weather predicted and temps in the low 70’s, ND should roll them up by halftime.

This is an opportunity for QB Ian Book to get the kinks out in the passing game. I wouldn’t let him run at all – stay in the pocket and go downfield a lot.

If we don’t see #2 QB Phil Jurkovec by mid 3rd quarter and a lot of other subs, ND is in for a long season.

Why the hell can’t ND come out and blow the doors off a much weaker opponent?

At the end of last season, plus QB school, Ian Book started out very badly and had a serious case of happy feet. He just does not have confidence in the OL and ND’s center got pushed around like a rag doll.

So Book bolted and while he had some good gains, he apparently has a lot of trouble throwing on the run. Personally I think his height is a detriment.

His passes did not have the zip and accuracy which he had last year. He did, however, play a lot better in the 2nd half and had a perfect 26 yard pass to Tommy Tremble, hitting him on the run for a TD.

Along with Book’s struggles there was an ominous feeling that ND’s defense was ripped for 250 yards rushing by Louisville – much of it right up the middle.

I did like the play of LB’s Drew White and Jack Lamb when they were in. Not so much for Asmar Bilal.

Good thing we have Safety Alohi Gilman who was all over and ended with 10 tackles. I don’t recall our DE’s doing anything.

They have 2 weeks to get their act together before Georgia.

Notre Dame visits Louisville on 9/2 to open the 2019 Season.

Louisville has all new coaches and the HC Scott Satterfield is a rising star in the coaching ranks. He did a terrific job at Appalachian State, but he readily admits the players he inherited at Louisville are not nearly as good as the team he just left. Louisville had a total team collapse last year and finished 2-10 and some of the players just flat out quit.

They don’t belong on the same field with ND and the Irish will cruise to an easy victory with ND’s DE’s owning Louisville’s mediocre QB Pass.

ND blows them out quickly and the backups get a lot of work in this game.

Ian Book throws 4 TD passes and ND runs over 350 yards.

Notre Dame will open Sunday at Culver Academy. 5 days there and then back to campus.

There is not much to be learned here except the concern about the LB position.

Both Book and Jurkovec camped this summer and Kelly stated they are not going to dabble in Jurkovec’s throwing motion. He’s never seen that work. So the number 2 guy – just do what got you here.

Only a month to go.

What beautiful weather to play football. These glorified scrimmages tend to get boring nevertheless it was nice to see the perfect 50 yard pass Ian Book threw.

Book looked crisp, fast release and almost perfect placement. I believe he has 2 years of eligibility remaining – lets hope he stays.

The 2nd string QB needs a lot of work. It’s hard to believe he was a 5 Star recruit. He came in with an odd throwing motion.

If I was coaching him I’d just let him wing it like he did in HS. It’s too damn hard to correct after throwing that way for 12 years. He’s already got too much on his plate.

I like the 1st team OL – forget the 2nd team OL. We also finally have a stable of good RB’s with punch. So our offense will be good enough to keep us in most games.

I really like the DL – we’ve got pass rushers that will win a lot of games for us.

We could once again be in the hunt for the NC.

The good news is that ND doesn’t get to play Alabama and probably lose 100 to 0. Alabama has RB’s the size of our Lineman or at least look like it.

Ian Book was harassed, hurried, hit and sacked the entire game. The ND receivers weren’t getting separation so that when Book finally got time no one was open. Book became skittish and made frequent hurried passes and just throwing up hopefuls.

In the end take some hope that ND held Clemson to 7 points in the 2nd half.

Out coached, out played and nowhere near a top 4 team. Losing Love was a hit, but the coaches have to compensate for that.

ND would not get anywhere near beating Oklahoma nor Alabama. Not many teams would – just size alone rules ND out.

Remember this was a true freshman QB who we set up for next years Heisman.

No mystery here – it’s Book vs True Frosh Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence. Notre Dame absolutely can’t allow him to just sit back and pass. By the way, he is an excellent passer – so ND must pressure him the entire game and hit him early and often. If ND can get to him they win.

Clemson the other hand, must get to Book and here’s where we will see if the ND OL can handle the best DL they have played.

I wouldn’t even run the ball against Clemson. Go up tempo all game and give Book time to throw – wear these guys down then the run game can finish off an exhausted Clemson “D”.
